Don Shapiro, Chairman of the Wings For LIFE Board of Directors, has worked in the field of community and human services with a focus on youth development for 52 years in New York and New Mexico. In New York, in 1972, Don co-founded The Door-A Center of Alternatives, an internationally acclaimed comprehensive multi-service center – still in operation.
Since moving to New Mexico in 1997, Don worked for 7 years at UNM as an internal management training and OD consultant, and since then with the NM Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) Transition Services.
Wings builds its program around about the Search Institute’s 40 DEVELOPMENTAL ASSETS, which identify WHAT young people need from their families and communities in order to thrive and grow. The Search Institute is currently focusing their research on DEVELOPMENTAL RELATIONSHIPS, where we learn HOW families (and others engaged with youth) can provide the strong, positive relationships needed to nurture the 40 Assets.
In January, we introduced the first element of Developmental Relationships, “Expressing Care”. In today’s workshop, we will review the Developmental Relationships and explore how to SHARE POWER. Sharing power highlights the ways we influence, learn from, and work with each other through our relationships. What’s challenging is that how we share power constantly shifts as kids grow up. What’s exciting is that we discover new things about ourselves and each other when we share power and learn from each other.
