Don Shapiro, Chairman of the Wings For LIFE Board of Directors,
has worked in the field of community and human services with a
focus on youth development for 52 years in New York and New
Mexico. In New York, in 1972, Don co-founded The Door-A Center
of Alternatives, an internationally acclaimed comprehensive multi-
service center – still in operation.
Since moving to New Mexico in 1997, Don worked for 7 years at UNM as
an internal management training and OD consultant, and since then with
the NM Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) Transition
Wings builds its program around about the Search Institute’s 40
DEVELOPMENTAL ASSETS, which identify WHAT young people need
from their families and communities in order to thrive and grow. The
Search Institute is currently focusing their research on developmental
research where we learn HOW families (and others engaged with youth) –
can provide the strong, positive relationships needed to nurture the 40
In January, we introduced the first element of Developmental
Relationships, “Expressing Care” with a focus the action of Listening. In
today’s workshop, we will review the Developmental Relationships we will
explore how to PROVIDE SUPPORT when helping youth complete tasks
and achieve goals during the Pandemic (and beyond) that will make a
meaningful difference! We provide support by offering practical help,
building each other’s confidence, standing up for each other, and keeping
each other on track. In this second session we will focus on the action of
Advocacy, how to speak up or stand up for our children and clients.
